In a one newspaper city, actually more of a fanzine, I'd be grateful for the stories they break. Personally, in Boston, I appreciate the opposing views of the Herald and the Globe. An echo chamber doesn't carry the news very well. At any rate, a half full Tidewater isn't exactly an exciting prospect.
With the weather being as it is it's way too early to judge attendance this time of year.
Beyond the stadium at Tidewater Landing being so heavily publicly subsidized, an additional problem it is going to have is dealing with the region's often less-than-ideal weather during the early stages of the USL Championship regular season schedule.
The league's schedule runs from early March through late October. It is wishful thinking to expect that there won't be a significant share of RIFC matches played in cold, damp weather in Pawtucket in March and April. The roofing that was on display in early artist's renderings of RIFC's stadium? It has been removed from the most recent illustrations, undoubtedly a casualty of the construction cost overruns and spiking interest rates on the bond issue to finance the project. Now, there's talk of the roofing being added to the facility "in the future".
Brett Johnson's original submission to the RFP issued by the city and state called for not only construction of the stadium, but development at the McCoy Stadium site (a complex of football, lacrosse, and soccer fields for youth tournaments), the Apex site (an indoor sports center, hotel, and offices), and across the river at the Division Street site (residences, restaurant, and retail). The McCoy plans were the first to evaporate, then the Apex project fell by the wayside, and - finally - the Division Street development was delayed. Johnson's development of the McCoy site is now off the table permanently, there are vague promises of him somehow being involved with plans the city envisions for the Apex property, and he's said that he's preparing to get underway with the Division Street project.
Johnson's made a lot of promises and - bit by bit - he's been backtracking on them since almost Day One. There's always been an excuse: COVID, supply chain issues exacerbated by the war in Ukraine, rising interest rates... yada, yada, yada. At some point, he needs to start delivering. If he doesn't come through on roofing being added over the stands of the stadium, attendance issues are going to be - at a minimum - a reality due to rain and cold each spring. And unless every home match is going to be played at night during the height of the summer, a lot of fans aren't going to be too keen about baking in the sun in July and August.
COULD RIFC develop into a well-supported and successful venture? Sure, conceivably. WILL it? That's going to be up to Brett Johnson's follow-through. The jury's still out there.

Funds so egregiously expensive and underperforming that incoming treasurer, Seth Magaziner, removed a billion dollars from their clutches before the paint dried in his new office.
