My husband got a job recently with a company that has locations near Boston and Warwick. Originally they were placing him in Boston, so all of my research on moving was based on Massachusetts. Now he is definitely going to be working in Warwick instead, so I'm scrambling to research nearby towns. We're trying to find a rental for a year until we get to know the area better. We have a pretty limited budget - we need to find something under a $1000 a month. I'm looking for a safe, family oriented area to move to since we have an infant daughter. I'm moving from a small city in Michigan. My husband's coworkers have recommended East Providence and West Warwick as areas we might look into, but what I've read about West Warwick hasn't been too positive. I was wondering about areas such as Cranston or East Greenwich? Or are there other parts of Providence we might look into as well?
It's renting under $1000 a month that's going to be the issue. I can't think of any town where that's going to be easy for a place of any real size or quality. If you're renting, you might as well stay in Warwick to cut the commute- plenty of safe neighborhoods. Look at apartmentratings.com and craigslist
I agree with Hollytree. If you're working in Warwick, why drive in from East Providence when you could rent a decent place in a decent neighborhood in Warwick? I've been in Warwick since I was a kid in the 70s, and while it's getting too busy and congested, it's still a fairly quiet city with mostly decent, safe neighborhoods. Good luck with your move.
Definitely Warwick over West Warwick (overall not a nice town).
The Oaklawn and Dean Estates/Garden City areas of Cranston near the Warwick line are nice. East Greenwich is very nice although I'm not too familiar with it. I assume the rents will be very high there.
But like others said, why not just go with Warwick?
Thank you all for the suggestions! I would be fine with living in Warwick, I just wanted some alternatives in case we can't find a place there in our price range.
You're correct about West Warwick, although rentals are less expensive. Warwick is nice and the schools are good, though, the middle/high schools do need some improvements. Gaspee/Lakewood, Greenwood Proper, Cowesett Hill area, are terrific areas with great elementary schools. You can find rentals through private parties for around $1000 month. Good luck!
Just thought I'd let everyone know, we found a place in East Greenwich. It's definitely on the higher end of what we wanted to spend each month, but it seems like a really neat area and I like being able to walk to shops, restaurants, bank, library, etc. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!
