If you have a chance to advice someone who is 20+ yrs from retirement what would it be

other than the usual financial stuff [ like saving more, spending less etc]

Thanks

Advice? About what? Surely you have some things in mind. Care to narrow it down a bit? 20+ years is a very long time. Advice that might resonate or even be relevant now may not be by the time you end up using it.

Yea, step up the need-to-do so that you can cut 5 or more years off those 20 years. If possible, of course.

Remember that the long-term is merely a series of short-terms.

A balance between "now" and "later" should be part of your decisions.

Don't worry about mistakes. You'll make mistakes whether you worry about them or you don't worry about them. So why worry?

Zero debt is a wonderful condition.

You and things will change as you age and the world ages. Today at 90 I would not attempt things that I used to enjoy.
We used to enjoy travel. We could do it economically with our small travel trailer towed with a mid size SUV. Really enjoyed the National Parks and trips to Canada and Mexico. I have not been out of this small county for several years. Now I no longer have the lady who was my wife for 63 years.

We mostly played it by ear as we went along.

My advice would be to use a Roth IRA rather than a Traditional IRA or 401k, because I think Roth puts you in a better tax situation later in life. I'm 63 and I have Traditional IRA and 401k, and I wish Roth had been around 40+ years ago when I started by IRA, or that I'd switched earlier.

Take care of your health before you think you need to. Eat right, keep moving, exercise, sleep right, foster good relationships, ask the older people in your life everything you might ever want to learn from them while you have the chance, avoid accumulating too much stuff, get a will and living will now and keep updating it, develop and pursue hobbies you enjoy and might want to keep doing in retirement.
