I will be having a medical procedure in two weeks after which, at least for a week, they want me to limit bending. I thought I'd order a "grabber" from Amazon, to help me pick stuff up from the floor without bending down. If any of you had used these things, could you recommend a particular brand or length (I'm 5'1.5 or 5'1)?

I like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm 5'4" and I used it a lot when I was recovering from cataract surgery and couldn't bend down, and now I use it for grabbing stuff from the back of the cupboard over the fridge, etc.

One that can be extended would let you also go for something high up or maybe a little to far away to get close too on the floor

This is a temporary need, right? Why pay top dollar? I'd go to a used medical supply store and test out a few. They probably have a variety you could try. I got a very simple one years ago for recovery from a THR. No bells or whistles. It worked just fine then and it still does today. One modification I made was to attach a strip of self-adhesive Velcro to the handle and also to my crutches. Easier to keep it handy. I quickly found crutching around the house looking for it was a vastly overrated pasttime .

I bought this one in 2016 for recovery from bunion surgery, and it's still going strong. Very sturdy.

I have the grabber tool from the below Amazon link.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I much prefer the handle type and operating the mechanism on this unique style of grabber. The mechanism on this one is really smooth and positive. I can pick up almost anything from a penny to a peanut. It is the rare item I can't pick up with this wonderful device.

Reasonably durable. I haven't broken one yet.

Don't expect a blue colored one like shown. Your only choice is silver.

I'm 5'1". I use my grabber the most to get things out of the car trunk when the items I need are all of the way in the back. I use salad tongs to get things out of the top loading washing machine. I knock cans off the shelf in the supermarket and none/zero/zip of my kitchen cabinets have anything on them above the bottom shelf.

It's in the trunk of my car right now (going on a road trip in 2 weeks) or I would tell you the brand. I got it from Amazon and it is green. It's more than 10 years old and I am getting shorter.

I laughed when Mrs. Obama got snippy because someone in the supermarket asked her (before her husband was President) to get something off the shelf for her (the customer). I think she assumed it was a woman who thought she was a store employee due to racism. The first thing I thought was, no, it's not because of the color of your skin. It's because you are really tall. I wouldn't ask a short store employee or customer to help me but anyone who is tall (customer or store employee) and saw me jumping up (I'm in my 70s) trying to swat down a top shelf can (it's worse if you live alone because you may have noticed stores tend to put the small cans/ice cream/small bottles etc., on the top shelf so when you are buying for one, almost everything you buy is on the top shelf) asks if I need help. And God forbid, you need 3 of the item and only 2 are at the end of the shelf (the other ones are pushed back and totally out of reach, even for swatting).

Good luck!

I have several of the Ettore grabbers. They're not flimsy.

I have a couple of these, they are solid. Just tested it out and it can pick up a dime laying on a tile floor. And learned that it can fold in half.
