I wouldn't use a wood burning heat source such as you described under any circumstances. Even once.
Trying to get my primary heat source working has been an ongoing saga, not one that just occurred, so I didn't see the point of having the exhausted, over worked guy come out in the bitter cold on a Friday afternoon when we were managing fine and, as far as the cold snap was concerned, the end was in sight.
Lots of things in life are "not fun". I'm not a martyr. If I can get through a short term difficult situation without spending money, that's the way I do it. I know many people had it rough during this cold spell but we (me and the animals) made it fine. It was an adventure. 50 years ago, it would have been much the same with me and my children.
But I am proud
and if I have to have workmen here, I would rather it not be when I have not bathed for a week and we are camping out in front of the baseboard heater under a pile of quilts. I watched the whole series of The Good Wife
I may be a little old lady but I am still a pretty tough old bird.
thank goodness we are over the hump! It was a balmy 26 degrees this morning and 60s predicted mid week
