I don't know anything about the building or land or land development costs in that part of the world - but it seems to me that the standard finishes in these houses (like laminate counters in the kitchen and fiberglass shower enclosures) are pretty low end. Robyn
Robyn, that is relative and folks have different expectations but I hear you. Folks have budgets and priorities. I have heard over and over Active 55 is a lifestyle choice. When we visited Carolina Preserve and noted what was standard the agent reminded us it was a lifestyle decision. Up grades were top dollar. Lots were at that stage were a compromise for the most part.

Those we saw with the basic package weren't bad. But they really push upgrades. Honestly most of them I would pass on and install myself.
My own personal response to Del Webb/Sun City is: depressing. It's not that I could not afford it, it's that I wouldn't live there if I were offered a place free. What a sterile "perfect" environment, with nothing unique (other than perhaps the style of individual residents' sofas), handcrafted, personally designed, or visually interesting . Honestly I would die, pining for some real character. Seeing these websites makes me admire all the more staunch individualists like Curmudgeon who are holed up in their private havens till the end, for better or worse. Give me the large and beautiful Boston brownstone walkup or the pine-walled cabin in the woods or the tiny weather-beaten cottage by the sea.

What is the farthest you have lived from where you present live?
Have you ever lived more then a few miles from where you presently lived?
I have lived in St Louis, a beautiful old suburb; in mid-Missouri; Brookine, Boston, Arlington, and Newburyport MA; briefly in VA, and in several places in Western New England more than "a few miles" away. Is there a point to your question? It is a matter of style, not location, and I only expressed my personal feeling.

Speaking of perfect...
What a perfectly bitchy post. Someone takes the time to write a comprehensive report about their visit to Sun City because they are contemplating living in a 55+ community and you - someone who has absolutely no interest at all in any 55+ community - just couldn't help yourself from pooping all over their thread. Did that give you some sort of perverse pleasure?
