A wonderful overview! I read it with great interest and appreciated all the details. My hubby likes Hilton Head, in general, even tho he can no longer golf, so we have talked about a visit. This outlines what to expect.
Wonderful report! Very comprehensive and informative. Thank you!!!
Did you notice any trend in which areas the residents were from, i.e. northeast, Midwest, south, etc.? I've heard there are a lot of New Yorkers living there...
What a great review, thank you! We lived in Charleston for 4 years and loved the area but it is too hot for us to add to the possible retirement locations.
Good report - How was the traffic? Is this the time of year Hilton Head is at its peak, tourist-wise? (I always ask that for tourist towns.)
No idea what the norm is, but we didn't feel it was any worse than a similar highway here. They are working on parts of it so it gets a little messy at times. The biggest thing we noticed is that speed limits, stop lights, and stop signs are merely suggestions. It pays to be more alert than normal. That goes for northern FL, GA, and southern SC, the areas we traveled.

East coast mostly. We were the only ones from the Midwest. PA, NY, NJ seemed to be the higher numbers that we met. I will correct myself. Our realtor was from the Midwest. Our state as it turns out. A whole lot of very friendly, very happy people there.
We stayed at Elizabeth Pointe Lodge on Amelia island in FL the last three days and it was the same there. East coasters.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Very informative.
So, have you decided not to purchase there at all? That is disappointing that some of the trip was not so good -like the hotel, some restaurant and not getting to meet with the rep. How weird is that? You think they would be so in tune to people wanting info on buying there.
We were going to go in November to TN (Mt Juliet) they have a Del Web community there but have decided to wait until hubby retires and then just go. We can always travel around from TN to Carolinas to FL and stay awhile unless we find a state we really want to call home, which I hope we do sooner rather than later. We have an old sick dog and I just can't kennel him out or have someone watch him. I just can't. Also a vacation of 3 weeks will not really give us an idea of the different areas as much as we would want. It's disappointing to me but I'll get over it and I think it is for the best.

And yet someone told you moving there would add 20 years to your life?
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Very informative.

We are on the fence. A part of this morning has been spent researching. We found:
The closest large (non-outlet) mall is 45 minutes south in Savannah.
In a ten-mile radius there is one female doctor, not that many in total. Closest urologist we could find is 25 miles away. Edit: They have "Nephrologists" which is apparently the same thing?
There are more restaurants than we expected in the area. You just have to know where they are.
Still on the fence, but becoming leery of the lack of some amenities, which is a shame because it is a really beautiful place to live.
There are a lot of retirement and other places being built jn the area and one would expect the shopping and medical to catch up, but it's gamble I'm not sure we are willing to take.
Still doing research...
Mt. Juliet - Nashville area. No thanks for a lot of reasons. Tornado alley for one.
We took a two week trip through the south and east one year. The worst experiences were there. Rude people. A lot of rude people. We had our car broken into (along with another couple) at the hotel and when we were talking to the person at the counter we were told it had been an ongoing problem for quite some time. And they didn't have the common courtesy to tell guests this so they could make sure their cars were empty (our was but we had a folded blanket laying on the back seat that the thieves apparently thought covered something).
When we called the police to report it they declined to help because it happened on private property.
At the Grand Ole Opry there was a restaurant we went to. We ordered our food. We watched other tables with people that got there after us get served while we waited. I finally asked our waiter where our food was and was told it was prepared elsewhere (What?) and brought to the restaurant. When asked why others were getting theirs he said "Because theirs was ready first." Yeah, right. No tip for that jerk who obviously forgot to turn in our order - and the food was lousy.
I'll pass on ever living there or visiting there again.

This is incorrect due to my misunderstanding Mrs. Tek. There is only one female internal medicine specialist within a ten mile radius.
