It took me 2 months after I turned 62 even though I applied 3 months early. The good news is that I will get my final check 2 months after I die.
Since 62 is the earliest age anyone can start normal Retirement benefits, there is a "special" rules. You must be 62 for an entire month, so unless you are born on 1st of month, that month doesn't count. If birthday is say May 4, then May doesn't count and June's benefit is paid in July.
After 62, 1st benefit is paid the month after you "start" benefits.
Re: Social Security benefit check application done online.
After I applied ONLINE, for social security benefit check payments, I was expecting a decision in 5 days.
Finally, in about 10 days, when I went online to check, it was indicated that the decision was mailed.
My question is:
Does that length of time (10 days), that it took to get the decision, and the fact that it was NOT available to see ONLINE, usually mean, that my application was red flagged, and denied, and may require an appeal?
Or, is the 10 day time, and notification ONLY by mail, "par for the course"???
Thank You.
OK, thanks. I keep forgetting. I guess June 19 for Sept. 19 date I turn 62.
SSA has a rule that says if you are applying at age 62, the month you turn 62 does not count. You must be 62 for a full month before benefits start. So you would apply in July (or later) for a check in November.
FWIW: Several years ago I turned 64 in April. Lost my job in June (downsized). Called SS in July and applied for payments, received first check in September/October.
