Shelby Dodge CSX, the '89 was the last but, Carroll Shelby wanted all-wheel drive, IROC/RT motor and active suspension for 1990. Chrysler reportedly thought it was to expensive, Subaru came out with the WRX two years later and became an modern automotive icon.
The Volvo 240 almost got good before getting axed. The 1993 models were almost really good cars, but age of the design and the continuing reliance on the same garbage components conspired against them, so they never really got to be good all around.
The 940 was a truly good car based on the 240s power train but with much better... everything. That got axed in 1997, though.
Studebaker. Last models were very good cars, the pickup trucks were even better. But they couldn't fight the Big Three. Especially the Lark, in the early 60s.
Jenson Interceptor Top Gear sure showed what a modern LS3 Corvette Engine and built transmission can do for one of those that they look like great vehicles to do a engine swap with
I've owned two... a '85 (from '87 to '95) and a '89 (current).
The '85 had quite few issues, from dashes that cracked to heaters that didn't heat and then quit, to weak transmissions...etc.
Speed, ride and handing were never issues.
The '89 is much improved. They never changed the trannys, though. And they took away the biplane spoiler.
I think the Chrysler Pacifica was way ahead of its time and not sure why it got axed.
Because the Pacifica was a joint venture car between Chrysler and Mercedes Benz when Mercedes Benz owned Chrysler. It was not a good selling car like they hoped it could be so they droped it. Now that Fiat owns Chrysler they are deciding what cars and trucks to keep and those to drop.
The Chevy SSR finally got enough power to justify its racy looks, in the year they dropped it.
They got the Mazda Millenia's issues sorted just in time for it to be discontinued. The Miller-cycle engine technology in it is a prime candidate for further refinement; problems with the electric superchargers were what killed off the Millenia's reputation and it never recovered from the bad PR.
The current VW Beetle is one of the most attractive products in the lineup - quality inside, intelligently designed and fun to drive. But they have said they will likely discontinue the model after this year due to declining sales.
