Why are we arguing navels when the true question is why was Adam created with a small dink?
God's first attempt at man, in his own image no less, and graced with a thimble that squints the eyes.
The bolded just cracked me up!
As for the reference by another poster about the pictures of Jesus as His being blond and blue-eyed ...John Shelby Spong said that he always thought Jesus was a Swede!
Coming back to add: I just remembered what I was told in Sunday school. Adam and Eve had belly buttons because that is where god pressed when he made them to test if they were done baking

Yes, as early as 1857, Phillip Gosse published Omphalos (navel), An Attempt to Untie the Geologic Knot. In this book, he maintained that God created the universe, the earth and life with the appearance of age — that the creation bore false records of a non-existent past. He even proposed that God created trees with annual rings for years that never existed. Hence, why A&E had navels.

That's jumping through rings of fire and eating little pieces of glass to concoct an explanation that saves dogma, when there's a much simpler explanation: the universe looks old because it IS old.

Bringing the receipts, nice - I've seen it referred, never checked it out myself. I'll have to look it up. I do not consider it a convincing argument, but I concede it's pretty elegant.
Jesus had a belly button also and he became a new Adam as a husband inside his bride as a spirit, as it was with Adam. We are all born of Adam by a fallen spirit.
More so, it's the 2nd commandment violation. Do not create an idol for yourself. ALL of those pictures, etc, are idolatry and Christianity is the only one out of the three Abrahamic religions that permits it.
But, yes, as said before - dumb artists and poor church censorship, considering that, in younger ages, every religious art was to be approved by church.
They are not idols. No one that I have ever known bows down and prays to a picture of Adam and Eve. The cross is not a person but represents what was sacrificed for everyone I am not so sure that is even an idol.
Adam has a bellybutton I think maybe the painter had a belly button so he assumed Adam would too.
One might also ask why Jesus is depicted as a white skinned Caucasian in many, many paintings?
An even more intriguing question is what would happen to christianity in the United States -- particularly the southern United States -- if we suddenly learned that Jesus was African!?!
