UNESCO has recognized the Orthodox Transfiguration Cathedral in Odessa, Ukraine as a world heritage site for its history and beautiful architecture and artwork inside. Many people including non-religious people or people of other religious backgrounds often appreciate and value this and other religious buildings for the culture, art, history, and uplifting of human possibility in creation.
Unfortunately, a missile hit it. The building is mostly still intact. Ukraine's defense minister said:
"God forgive them because we won't."
Russia is blaming incompetent Ukrainian missile defense as they say video footage shows it was one of the Ukrainian defense missiles that hit it....as if Russia launching missiles into a populated area had nothing to do with that...
Josef Stalin had destroyed this Cathedral in his war on Religious freedom and freewill. It was rebuilt from the ashes before. It can be rebuilt again.
What about the 1 person and 22 people injured (including children) from the missile that damaged the Transfiguration Cathedral?
At the end of the day...
buildings are but bits of earth, even beautiful UNESCO world heritage sites. Human lives are miracles and can't be rebuilt once killed, there is the real tragedy that piles up hourly. One can hold a religious service in a shack, but one can't get back their earthly life. May this war end.
How silly are we humans. The person that died in the strike will likely not be known to the masses. But the Cathedral will be rebuilt and Odessa history will feature the missile that tore part of it down as a big deal and its refurbishment will happen. What are our values?

The Cathedral is named after the moment that Jesus revealed himself on the mountain to John, James, and Peter.
