Really, they should reach some kind of compromise where he shows support by attending major functions, when the whole congregation is watching and the wife’s organist skills presumably have the most time to shine.
Short of that, if he wants to show that sort of support, he can stand to put away Infinite Jest for an hour and sit there like a good little boy.
It's a risky move. What happens next time he wants her to watch the kids so he can go do something? M "sorry Hunny, get one of your friends to do it. I really want to go to a coffee shop and read." Maybe she is a SAHM and this is her one hour a week to be a musician. That's why I suggested the book cover.

In the absence of more information, I’m inclined to believe there’s something off with this marriage if the OP can’t try to find some midway compromise that sets a reasonable boundary. Spousal support goes both ways.

Yeah, she should really be supportive of him not wanting to be supportive.

She should be supportive of him not wanting to go to a weekly ritual that bores him so much, he can’t even play the part of the good little church husband for an hour. If the kids have to be there, and he has to be the one with them, she’d probably find it quite rude and unsupportive if he read a novel through the whole exercise in the first place. That’s just half-assing things in a way that will please no one.

I agree. We're probably talking an hour.
