Moving this to the religion forum since this is not specific to any state or city.

Unless you’re a congregant volunteering your time as part of a religious ceremony or religion-connected charitable work, religious institutions absolutely can and should pay people for non-volunteer work. My Conservative synagogue pays all workers and non-lay religious leaders ranging from the Rabbi to the preschool and daycare teachers to the maintenance and environmental services staff. Trying to deprive anyone of compensation for payable work in the name of religion is shameful.

Most musicians in Protestant churches are volunteering their time and talents. As someone who has done that, it's a joy to give without expectation of $.
Apparently there's a very different attitude and mindset in synagogues.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I’m fully with the program, so I know that it depends on the circumstances. There’s a big difference between a congregant playing a song during a religious service and an outside band being hired to entertain the congregation during a social event. The key difference is engaging a non-clergy member for a secular service that just so happens to be provided in a religious setting.

We’re generous with our money and don’t try to bilk people out of fair compensation for payable work. It helps that we charge membership dues (with sliding scales based on household size and ability to pay) and don’t just pass around a collection plate.
