You're not using an official book. I read from the REAL book. Don't like it, form your own sect.

Oh yes indeed. Here in the uk division we even have a team of researchers who tirelessly google every day for new things we could do to **** off religions

Our engineers are working on it, however, tom cruise is too powerful to defeat so we're taking the fight to xenu instead by doing some retro-engineering. We
figure that by removing the wings from the 2 DC10 currently in our hangars, they would become spaceborne and it would allow us to have some intergalacting mayhem

Here are few examples for the Google-challenged:

Sigmund Freud; psychoanalysis

Thomas Edison; numerous invetions such as motion pictures, phonograph recording, and everyone's favorite - the electric light

Carl Sagan; NASA scientist, educator, environmentalist, and author of the PBS Cosmos series as well as several best-selling popular books on astronomy and science

Mark Twain; humorist, social critic and author

But there's no denying the obvious. We atheists are evil to the core.

And as for that old bogus myth about "there are no atheists in foxholes", well LOTS of us served in the military. And there are still plenty in today's military.

Coosjoaquin, You get my vote, well done and kudos and chickenlivers to the scientists-
It's a good thing someone is investigating all this. I do like a bit of mayhem now and again.

and Skoro, it's a fact we're in the same groups as Sagan, and others...nice company.

I think that many of us live our lives on a multitude of different secular learnings and although some may choose to side with one particular philosophy as a matter of personal choice, it most likely is not the only philosophy that they build upon.

To ask what atheists stand for or what they are against... As I said, that would define us as having some set form of idealistic belief. The only thing that separates an atheist from a theist is that we do not believe in God. We don't see evidence for it, and so we choose to live our lives as if one does not exist.

What can they contribute to society? How about a rational, non-dichotomized way of thinking? How about the freedom of thought to come to conclusions based on what we see as the result of a lifetime of learning instead of a lifetime of just accepting and taking for granted what we are told is the absolute truth? Other than that, to paint a picture of anything more is to say that atheism is defined by some sort of "code" and thus becomes a religion. The only thing any atheist has in common is his/her non-belief in a deity. That's it. It doesn't make us criminal, immoral, insane, or evil. It's just a non-belief.
I agree entirely with this post, specially about atheists contributing to our society, tremendous contributions to the world have been made by non believers

It'd be tremendously wrong to think otherwise.

However I have to say that a big amount of theists are also well versed in many moral philosophies, codes, and. humanities.

Not all theists are against science, or just accept and take for granted what they are told, a lot keep questioning and searching for that truth.

Not all theists see atheists as bad people some of us believe that God is omnipresent and he expresses in atheists too. hence the contributions to society made by atheists or the fact that most atheists are nice and kind fellas.

Some of us believe that eventually they will start seeking God in some incarnation.

it would be difficult for an atheist to understand or believe on this but you can try and phillosophize about it

Some theists have spiritual disciplines, which are exact sciences for us, they are failure proof (in our opinion) and will give you the experience of God if you follow them thoroughly.

Some of us believe that these spiritual disciplines have given us scientific proof of God's existence, and will give us the final God realization or Self realization if we continue on this path for the rest of our life (combined with right action of course) we'll attain this state somewhere around the end of our lifes, although some people attain it very early in life, and most of us take millions of lifes to attain it (hence the need of scientific methods to accelerate this process)

I'm saying it like this because I guess it would be easier to understand this point of view explained in this way

Atheists are those who don't hold theistic beliefs. That's it.

I was attempting to gain defining characteristics. Not necessarily what atheists have accomplished.
