Free Will, as in the ability to voluntarily CHOOSE, is essential to what we are to BECOME. The development of free, independent, self-directing and mature Spirits absolutely requires such freedom to choose. The key is recognizing that is the GOAL of our maturation experiences and processes. Our immaturity is unavoidable and cannot be forced or otherwise coerced into existence by punishments or rewards!!! We must GROW into it over time which is the definition of maturation!
