Many Christians believe that sex is intended, by God, for procreation only. This is why practicing Catholics do not believe in using birth control.
If this is the case, there are only three scenarios possible for Adam and Eve while in the Garden of Eden:
1) They did not have sex in the Garden of Eden because no children were born to them until after they were evicted. Remember, they had to have been the best of health therefore fertility would have been assured.
2) Adam and Eve did have plenty of sex. Therefore, God allowed sex for purposes other than procreation. God did not yet program Adam and Eve to conceive while they were still in the Garden.
3) Adam and Eve had sex, conceived, but were not in the Garden long enough (nine months) for the pregnancy to result in childbirth.
The first thought I had was, why nitpick over the location where Adam and Eve might have had sex? They had children...so they had sex. Why would it matter whether they did it in Eden or not?

I am trying to determine whether God condones sex when it isn't for procreation or whether Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden less than 9 months.
Why? The Catholic pope is on record saying sex should only be for procreation and therefore contraception use is a sin.
And, bible apologists are trying to reconcile the young earth snafu with the overwhelming evidence of a very old earth by saying that Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden for a very long time.

Pulling from very old memory, what I was taught is that the forbidden fruit that they tasted was sex, not an apple, which up until then, they had been innocent of.
When you think how much sex has ruled and ruined so many men, it makes sense

That does seem to make sense, and it's a pretty clever metaphor.Moderator cut: off topic

There isn't any indication in Genesis how long Adam and Eve were in Eden. But in Genesis 3, they're thrown out. Genesis 4 begins thusly: "And the man knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain." This seems to indicate that it happened after they were evicted from Eden.
There really was no indication that is was wrong for adam and eve to have sex. They were married and married couples have sex for procreation as well as for pleasure. If God wanted sex for procreation alone it woudnt feel good to have it. God wants husbands and wives to love and enjoy each other not see it as a chore that must be done. Dont depend on what the catholic church teaches you. God left us a great manual to go by...the BIBLE. Dont ever go by what man tells you. Man is full of sin and is mortal. Trust only in God and the Bible and as for guidance only then will you walk in the correct path.
What we are told is that the adama was created for the "dirty work" that the gods were not willing to perform. Kind of like one particular privileged class in the U.S. willing to import another class of people (usually termed "aliens") to work as domestics and farmhands.
What upset the Enlilites was the fact that Enki and Mammu gave the adama the ability to procreate, thus allowing the human to breed like crazy and eventually take over the world.
When it comes to sex, the RCC during the Middle Ages tried to control the uncontrollable breeding among the royal houses. The leaders of the Christian religion at that time were responsible for introducing sex as something that was less than holy. Hence we have admonitions that sex is only for procreation and cannot be enjoyed through the completion of the act without sinning or affending God.
But these miscreants were not the first. We read in Paul's writings a strong bias against sex, a Jewish thing that started out as rules to keep oneself hygenic that exploded into something that prevented one from remaining spiritually pure.
In any case, something as natural as sex has been perverted into various forms of the unnatural. Then, people try to regulate such deviance through religion rather than education.
Simians have been documented to have copious sex during their leisure times. However, they are not perverse about it. Their rules are simple: the alpha male gets to do most of the copulation. Humans try to share this concept, including jealousy and murder to insure perceive rights are maintained.
The only difference between the simians and humans is that humans designed religion to to make life all the more hellish than it need be.
