Did Wake Co schools elect new board members and what are their plans with this issue? What is going on in upper leadership in these school systems? They are so soft on disciplining kids and then stuff like this gets out of control. They have a tough one on their hands now - 1 student dead.
Southeast Raleigh High School will be closed Tuesday after a fatal stabbing led to a student dying, another student being hospitalized and another student in custody.
Police have not yet identified the victims or the suspect of the stabbing.
I mean I'd put the blame more on parents honestly. I feel like schools hands are tied often times because if they do too much, you get Joe and Jane Bickerson coming out of the woodwork complaining about "you can't touch my child" or "you can't tell them that" or "your facts are wrong I believe the world is run by the peanut mafia" or yadda yadda.
Fund schools better and give them more authority to do sane things.
My son graduated from SRMHS and I've been there many times including inside the gym where the fight happened. He had personal items stolen and there were some fights but not on this level of violence. Every time something like this happens no matter in what part of the country the first thing the talking heads say is we need more school security, but it's just talk and they do nothing as the cycle repeats again and again. At a minimum they need to install metal detectors and increase hall monitoring. It's way past time for the school administration leaders to either put up and do something tangible or shut up. Actions speak louder than words.
Schools aren't completely responsible for the lack of parenting in most cases
That is true, however schools are responsible for what happens on campus during school hours. Back in my day we had a school Dean that patrolled the campus and he also had a paddle in his office. Maybe it's time to bring back some of the old ways that were effective and actually worked.
Schools are just too large to manage, IMO.
300+ kids per class year, or more.
Of course, I went to a rural school that barely had 1,000 kids, K-12, so that influences my thoughts.
But, it seemed that "everyone knew each other."
I think social media plays a huge role in what happens on school grounds. Bullying or arguments begin with social media posts and then escalate higher into in person confrontations or fights on school grounds. Those kind of situations are harder to detect early and deescalate before physical assaults take place.

Wake County schools doesn't elect board members. Voters do. The fact that you're asking this question means you are part of the problem because you clearly don't vote. The entire board was up for re-election in 2022. The names of the candidates for your district were right there on the ballot. Two board members didn't run for re-election. Of the nine seats, only two were flipped from one party to the other.
To answer the question, they will do nothing. WCPSS no longer has a mission to educate the children in their care.
Watch a board meeting sometime. Every other Tuesday, it's on YouTube. Follow the N&O education reporter on Twitter.

300???? Even Cardinal Gibbons graduates almost 400. My son was one of 735 at Green Hope. My daughter's class was "only" 500 and that means the school is under-utilized per WCPSS so a whole bunch of people from Apex got reassigned there last year.
Apex Friendship is one of the five largest schools in the state. They're sitting at around 2800+ population right now.
This is why you'll also never see metal detectors. High schools open their doors around 6:50 give or take and kids are still straggling in at 7:20. You'd have to start school at 6 am to get all the kids through metal detectors. And who is going to man them? Who is going to search the backpack? We constantly hear stories of people who shoot themselves and others when their hand closes on a gun and it goes off....whether they are trained or not. Teachers are leaving in drovers. There are multiple uncovered classes in WCPSS and more teachers planning to resign. You think teachers are gonna take on that task? (sorry Mike I'm using the colloquial "you" here).
