Last year my son's baseball league, which usually has nice enough weather for its spring tryouts in February, was snowed/iced out two weekends in a row and ended up having tryouts indoors.

On average it's warmer than this, but for every day with above median temperatures, like the aforementioned 80 degree Christmas, you're going to have a below median day to make up for it.

Keep in mind the upper 70 degree days we had in December. We ran the AC for close to 3 weeks during that month!

Why is the population in the Triangle area and NC increasing? You would never know we have good things going for us reading all these posts complaining about something here. We even have posters from California, Florida, Texas, western NC and would you believe Statesville NC piling on. LOL.
All I have to say if you do not like it here please leave.

I agree with that - you may have a handful of frigid blasts in the winter and a handful of oppressive heat days in the summer. Overall, though, I think that there is a nice mix of seasons.

To the OP's point, yes it does get downright cold here. I've only been here 10 years so there are others who can probably speak to the trends, but my observation is that December and January is a craps shoot - like this year, it could be 80 on Christmas and then by January 5, the high was 34.

February is usually the "winter" month, and I believe when we have the best chance for snow.

Overall though, we curse the freezing cold and blistering hot days but have it pretty good the rest of the year.

Can't beat the 4 seasons.

You know you're right about February. When talking to people from the north (in know it's a rarity to run into one around here) I was always amazed, they look at February as when winter is starting to wind down (obviously the wind down is more than a couple weeks) and down here, we always thought of it just really getting started.

Yes. I love four seasons, when there is less variation between them.
