What about Dodge City, Kansas OP? It's still part of the west and has that culture you're looking for.

Just a note

If you pick Prescott and decide you like going down the hill to Phoenix you will not like the highway traffic too and from.
Just moved from PV following the son and his kids last year.

When the market was low I picked up a nice 3/2 on Rambling Lane in PV for $188k. I just sold it last year for $433k. Yes it is getting very expensive to live there.

Now in Greer, SC, just north of Greenville. Nice area, lots of trees and water. Picked up a 2000 sq.ft. home on 3/4 acre in a private area for $318k last year. Big difference.
Climate here is much like where I was born and raised in the SF Bay area and we like it.

Hot Springs Arkansas very cheap cute town. An hour or so from Little Rock. For Medical specialists, one would need to drive to Little Rock for better care.

And the rain helps cool things off during the warmer months.

I was just back there in November, and it has changed a lot. They are developing like crazy, and yes, real estate prices have skyrocketed. Not only are people moving there from hotter cities like Phoenix, they are absolutely fleeing California, where I still live, in droves. Thus driving up prices.

My wife passed away in August, and I need to get out of Sacramento. Rent is too high, and I don't need this big house anymore. I have friends in Prescott/ Prescott Valley who want me to move back there. But cost of living might be prohibitive now. I'm considering Las Cruces, NM, where I grew up. My sister, who just passed, lived there pretty much her entire life.

The Prescott area is generally nicer than Las Cruces, which is kind of a mixed bag. But I'm pretty sure cost of living would be lower there. Need to do more visiting and research. Also considering Brenham/ College Station area of Texas. My niece and her family want me to move near them. Anyway, any input here would be appreciated.

I know Sacramento very well, loved going up to the mountains on highway 50.

Prescott is indeed far too big nowadays. Yesterday driving on the main road through the valley it was bumper to bumper as far as the eye could see. As soon as that light turns green everyone drives like Mario Andretti with a hangover. Go to the bank to cash a check and nineteen people are line. I helped a friend put up a little home depot shed in his backyard and his neighbor called the county and the HOA. Take my dog to the lynx lake and broken glass and fishing hooks are all over the shoreline. Prescott is turning into an overpriced dump.

Personally if I were an older cat who wanted that Desert Life...I'd be looking at a smaller town in NM.

OP, what about Scottsbluff, NE? It's nothing like the rest of the state and borders Wyoming. 4 seasons and relatively cheap. Not a desert, but high plains grassland.

That wind isn't strong in Scottsbluff, it's when you travel further west into Wyoming does it get hectic but it's not bad as what people make of it. At least the air is clean. I'd suggest visiting the area, Oregon trail runs through it. It's my hometown, so I can be biased.
