Thanx PhotogGal.
That is a friends daughter. I sat her on a bench by my pond and took some quick pics a few weeks ago with the SX. After they left and I uploaded the pics I noticed the blowout of light in her left eye in thsi one. Making the photo a B&W and doing a soft focus edit on it made it look somewhat ok.

She is a cutie. But to tell you the truth, I think the blowout of light looks great on her. To me, she's outside, its nice and peaceful, she looks content and part of the sun is shining on her. Its like one of those peaceful quiet summer days, wind is still, light filtering through the trees, a kind of day we all need.

The light definitely adds a positive effect to it.

Fuzz, these are really great -- especially the third (very moody and dramatic) fourth ones.

I can't rep you again yet, Blondie, but your photo of Jenny above is really terrific. She looks like a very sweet puppy too!

For those interested in B&W, here's a quick tip to get good B&W shots out of color: instead of using the standard desaturate command in an editing program (or in-camera), use the Channel Mixer feature (that's what it's called in Photoshop; not sure what the equivalent in other programs like GIMP). Check the Monochrome box and then play around with the percentages of red, green, and blue to get different color > gray values. As a start, you can try setting one of RGB to 100% and the other two to 0% (you can also set negative values -- as long as the total adds up to ~100%).

A simple way to think about it is: the higher you set a color % to, the lighter that color will appear in B&W (and conversely, the lower you set a color % to, the darker it will appear in the B&W). So setting blue to 0% and red to 100% will convert a red rose under a blue sky to a white/light rose under a black/dark sky.

And to throw a real twist into it, after you've adjusted Channel Mixer, try changing the Hue and see what happens.

B&W shots also respond well to Curves adjustments to create more contrast IMHO.

Thanx photogGal. That pic was taken with my A630 and was not the sharpest image of her, but I posted it anyway because I love the photo in B&W and her expression is as sweet as she is!
