I've been exploring Tucson's Dive Bars, one by one, and I take my ferret, Lucky, to the bars with me. At 73YO, I doubt anyone would even talk to me, but if I bring in Lucky, OMG! He becomes the star attraction at the bar. Can I pet your ferret? Can I take a picture or video of your ferret? Can I hold him in my arms?

I do see some people bring in their dogs, and most Dive Bars I have gone to accept pets in the bar.

How about you? You keep your dog at home?

There was a place I used to go to with patio seating where people would bring the occasional dog. No big deal.

But even if I went to "dive bars," I wouldn't bring my dog or relish the type of attention he would undoubtedly receive. But if your ferret doesn't mind and makes a good icebreaker, why not?

@73YO I still smoke, and there's Dive Bars with good sized indoor or outdoor smoking areas. Not all these bars are as Divey as you'd think. Some are rather upscale like the Shelter bar which advertises the best smoking lounge in Tucson. Open the door to that room and you won't smell any smoke as the filtration system is absolutely over the top.

Some of these bars are historic, one has been in operation since the 1940's, the Shelter bar has posters and memorabilia of JFK, Eisenhower, LBJ.

I do see some dogs, here and there, but not a great number.

I take it you don't live in a small town... where I live (a small town in the Santa Cruz mountains), the average age at our "dive bar" (only bar) is probably around 60-65.

And yes, I have brought my dog there once or twice. I don't do bars in general, since I have little interest in alcohol. But during our winter storms/power outages, that was the easiest place to get power + WiFi and charge up my devices. Dog came with, but only for a brief stop. He isn't great at sitting still, being a husky and all. But it's dog-friendly inside, and he met a nice pittie type that one time.

Now I have two huskies, so probably not. lol

Some bars cater to people with dogs. Here is one, and I know of another.

In the small beach town where I used to live I had a dwarf Nubian goat named Wilbur as a pet. When I went back to work full-time I gave Wilbur to the owner of a beachfront motel. He would drive around town with Wilbur in the front seat of his pickup truck and also took him into the bar that extended out over the Potomac River. (Bars weren't allowed in town, but ON the river was considered the next state, lol). That bar had, shall we say, a pretty relaxed atmosphere. Everybody loved Wilbur, btw.

I've been in dive bars where the dogs outnumbered the people!

I am not attention seeking so it's not something I would do.

Ferrets smell and are hyperactive. Can they be potty trained?
