Hi, We have been searching the forums for what states would fit best as far as making our last move before we retire.
We have a child who is 12, two little Yorkies, my husband and myself. It is hard to find the right state and area when we have to live on a fixed income, Minnesota is getting too high and the cold and dampness is getting to the RA and Fibromyaliga.
We are trying to find a house for around $100,000 that is a three bedroom, with double garage. Nice neighborhoods and good schools. I have been looking in the Dewey, Bartlesville area, but the relocation page goes back to 2000 and is not updated.
If this is a nice area, please let us know, or if there are other areas that may be better. We plan on taking a long trip through Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Arkansas when our daughter gets done with school for the year, and these are some of the states we have been looking into.
If anyone can give us some advice as to what ideas they may have, that will help us decide, we would be very grateful. Thanks, Yorkie

Default From another Yorkie owner

Our Yorkie wants to welcome you to Oklahoma-before you even get here. We have at least three close friends from out of state. There will be other folks anwering your questions for where to move etc, but believe me, you will be happy wherever you settle.
The price of Yorkies is much cheaper here too!
My personal word of advice is don't stick to one realtor as there are many here and not all realtors are the same. We see many houses for much cheaper than your budget listed online.

Many suburbs can be found around OKC metro. It is really what you are looking for. In the heart of OKC is Mesta Park, Heritage Hills, Edgemere park, Lincoln terrace. All of these old historical homes can be found from 5 mil - 50,000. Right now is a good time to invest in these homes because of the huge revival around downtown OKC. these homes are very near midtown and little saigon(asian district). Lots of culture coming from all directions- i graduated from oklahoma city university with a BFA- This university is close to these neighborhoods and districts/galleries/ Paseo arts district is the only art community in oklahoma. Your children will thank you later for the diversity. Classen Scool of Advanced Arts(public) has been honored on a national level for academics and is close to the what i call the "core" of OKC. If public schools is what you want then Edmond/westmoore/Putnam city. OKC has great private schools- casady/heritage hall/mcguiness/mt saint marys and many others-but those are the big ones. The public school system in OKC has recieved tons of money from maps for kids- to build completely different schools/ better tech/ better everything-but you wont see the changes for at least 3 years.

Ponca City would be a good town to look at as it is somewhat similar to Bartlesville (not as pretty an area but a beautiful town).

Does anyone know what kind of town Shawnee is? How are the schools in that area. Is it a good or bad area to raise a 12 year old girl? If you can give me anything to go on it would be helpful.
My husband picked it for it's size and housing cost. Thanks, Yorkie

Our friend who moved here from Montana bought a house and 2 acres for $27K. It is an old house, but that is about par for the course for living in the outback-, meaning as far from a city as possible. But that does not fit your needs. I was just pointing it out as a point of reference for buying a house in the country.
As for Shawnee, my POVs are always biased because I work in corrections and have friends who are either police or probation and parole officers. Shawnee has a definite growing population and with that a rise in crime/gangbangers. But I am sure there are many places one can live in Shawnee which are not "unwholesome". I will let other Shawnee residents fill you in with more in depth facts of Shawnee.
I used to commute to OKC and the interstate between I-40 and OKC is packed. OKC is approx. 30 minutes from OKC.
Good luck in your quest for a home.

What is a safe town to move to with little or no crime, and at least the size of 20,000 people??? I don't think Shawnee sounds like the safest place to raise our child.
I will take any ideas, some one mentioned Ponca City, or what about Stillwater or Muskogee????? Just trying to get a feel of what these towns are like, and most important the safest. Thanks, Yorkie

Why not Norman-do you really have to think over shawnee, stalewater(lived there with my boyfriend-the environment made us want to kill eachother) have you not heard of sooner football...landrun...NORMAN....OKC. Your child can be safe in Norman town you can be sure of that. the cops patrol constantly and are mean(at least to bad guys).Tree lined neighborhood streets with beautiful houses/the country side can be seen easily with rolling hills, vineyards and farm houses on the outskirts. We bought wine from a local vineyard 10 miles into the country side- they were having a tasting. The best university oklahoma-research institute. Wonderful charming downtown and university bars/eateries. Vibrant diverse people/beautiful college town. Most say you cant ask for more. but OKC is my choice of town hands down.

My bad! I don't want you to think Shawnee is a bad place to live.

Its a great place with both a small town feel and big enough to have lots of nice homes. When we drive in to Shawnee, we come into town from the east and there are a LOT of new homes being built.

I worked at one of the casinos in Shawnee and made a lot of friends there. Shawnee is a LOT nicer place than OKC IMO.

Hope I didn't confuse you even more!

Ok, Come on Okies, we are waiting to hear from you all, I know some one would like to brag about their town and the good things about it. If you picked a place for nice scenery, nice weather, and a safe town, of around 20,000 or more what would you pick and why???? Need some answers. Thanks, Yorkie
