About 30 miles from Charlotte, NC they just broke ground on expansion of an idle gold mine. They anticipate the mine could have 4 million ounces of gold and is one of the largest in the US. The company will be hiring a few hundred people in next couple years. There has been very little info from the local media so it will be interesting to see how impactful this gold find is. New gold rush in SC as mine plans to reopen - WBTV 3 News, Weather, Sports, and Traffic for Charlotte, NC-

Isn't there a North Carolina forum for you to post on? You spend a lot of time on the Ohio forums talking about North Carolina and it makes absolutely no sense. We get it, you think that Charlotte is great and that Ohio is terrible. You've made your opinion known, now please go away.

Yep and do that as well My posts are subject related and yes I do like CLT as I do Ohio and lived in Cleveland for many years, still do business there and a long time Browns PSL owner (since '85). It seems pertinent to mention a story of one of the largest gold mines being developed in US, which happens to be in my backyard. Obviously you have an interest in my thoughts since you spent time to read through posts going back a year but do I really need your permission to post on other forums

I know your story, and no, I don't have an interest in your posts. I didn't have to "go back a year" to find your previous "Charlotte is great" post on this thread, in fact I only had to go back one page. No one bit on it the first time, why did you need to make basically the same post a second time? All of your Charlotte cheerleading and Ohio-bashing really comes off as if you are still trying to justify your move.

I don't know if its true (no first hand knowledge) but I was told that years ago some old timers panned and found some gold dust & small nuggets in the Vermilion River (its either Lorain or Erie Counties near the Lake) ?

However, if somebody is up for a discussion that's really about gold in Ohio, I'm all for it.
I've been digging in Ohio, and Pa. since 1992. All of the gold that I have found is very small specs. I've been told that the farther west you go, the bigger it gets from not being pushed as far. You are correct about all gold in Ohio being placer gold. ( For all the people new to this it's pronounced "plasser", and means that the gold originated somewhere else and was moved here by mother nature. Lode gold is still in its original location, which is volcanic areas ). Our gold was pushed here by the Wisconsian glacier about 14000 years ago. Our gold originated in Canada.

Ok, now that everybody is up to speed, let's talk about gold in Ohio.
Ok well, lets say u might have come across somthing that looks like small specs in your pan. How do you know its gold and not some other substance???

You need to know some of the properties of gold. It's soft, you can poke it with a pin. Gold also has a yellow lustre, but doesn't sparkle. When it is in your pan with the sun shining on it it's very easy to see. Put your hand over the pan to cast a shadow. You will still be able to see real gold. Other stuff will disappear in the shadow. You can do an acid test too. Gold will only be dissolved by a very powerful acid mixture called aqua regia. Aqua regia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's possible for gold to float on top of the water in your pan. A drop of Jet-Dry will break the surface tension of the water to prevent that.
