Classifying the area where this new stadium is being built as suburban is moronic.

Potomac Yard is at best a quasi urban area. The strip mall itself however is suburban, but understood that this would be turned into an urban grid of mixed use activity. The issue is that Leonsis and VA have agreed to more of a "campus style" format. Which is nothing comparable to being in the heart of the city at one of the busiest multi-modal metro stops in DC, even with a shiny new Metro stop at PY.

Yeah there's kinda the whole issue though that no-one really cares about any of that.

Behind a strip mall?

I’ll believe it when I see it. A nonbinding contract, years away. $2 Billion in taxpayer fund,. Alexandrians being completely unaware. I’d be less surprised if this was a way to extract more concessions from DC.

I’d also have to imagine more people would have to take Metro than they currently do because the road infrastructure is very small directly to the proposed stadium, indirectly to the stadium, getting towards the stadium. Surely they’ll have to use eminent domain and buy out a lot of property owners to be able to widen the roads?

That said, whatever happens, happens. Don’t really care other than I’ll be laughing if this doesn’t pan out (not of Alexandria missing out, but at the governor celebrating at an event of a nonbinding agreement for something that is supposed to occur after elections - enough time for people to get mad).

Completely setting aside the fact that Gallery Place is a glorified urban strip mall (which businesses are fleeing left and right), the entire Potomac Yard retail strip is slated for redevelopment with millions of square feet of development.

You think behind the Potomac Yard Strip mall is as urban as Chinatown?

You’re unserious & probably an angry old person. Have fun shaking your fist.

Yea for real, it isn’t. I’ve noticed Arlingtonians and Alexandrians get real touchy if you don’t recognize their locales as being completely urban. A lot of them like to think this way so they can look down on the proles in Fairfax and further out.

There is no doubt that the current stadium location is definitely more urban in the built environment form than Potomac Yards.

It's six miles away from DC - why is it a big deal?
