I’ve come across a few grown adults who watch TV all day long, literally, from the time they wake up until the time they fall asleep. They just sit in front of it, eating junk food all day.

Even though there is healthy food, such as lean meats, fresh fruits and vegetables and the like, there, and plenty of books and computers around.

How in the world could someone stand watching TV and eating junk food all day? Obviously they are overweight.

Do you know people like this? What motivates them to act like that?

As you seem to know such people - have you asked them?

They are likely depressed and don't want to think about their problems. So they escape by watching TV and being in fantasy land. They eat junk food for the sugar or salt fix and the fatter they get the more depressed they become. It is a vicious cycle and sad. They probably need to see a mental health specialist to sort things out and get back on track to feel better.

Not a single one.

You claim that they do nothing but watch TV and eat every single day, all day long, for 18 hours.

If this is true, I can only conclude that these are individuals with special needs living in therapeutic communities or on disability. So to answer your question, it is because they are psychologically or cognitively disordered/disabled.

Thanks. Then I should be more empathetic. I will do so.

They aren't "motivated" to act like that. Many people may have incurable illnesses and mental or physical disabilities that prevents them from doing much of anything else except watch TV and eat food to relieve their boredom, depression, despair, helplessness, uselessness and hopelessness.

If you feel compelled to criticize or condemn the people YOU know who are able-bodied and able-minded but only spend their days watching TV and eating junk food then perhaps you should be doing something to help motivate them to enrich their lives and be constructive.

It's not really any of your business. Don't concern yourself with what others do when it doesn't affect you.

I’m simply asking about the situation. It’s a situation that I don’t understand, it thanks to the responses above, I now understand it better.

This situation doesn’t concern you either but, like me, you’re participating in an online message board about it, too.

Are these people you share a home with? I can't imagine how else you would know how particular individuals spend every minute of their days.

This was my immediate reaction, OP. Are these retired people? People living on unemployment or disability? What's enabling these people to maintain careers as couch potatoes? This is sad. What's even sadder, is when children are involved. Some couples raise their kids that way. These are the kids who are borderline diabetic by age 12 or so.
