Here is a historic sports reference about Val James, who was born in Ocala FL, but raised in Hauppauge on Long Island. He is the first African American to play in the NHL, when he played for the Buffalo Sabres(Willie O'Ree was born in Fredericton New Brunswick in Canada, likely to African American descendants and others before James also came from Canada). He also played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League
