Just because a building is old, and some guy of significance designed it, doesn't mean it's always worth saving. And this turd of a building falls into that category.
I was a bit surprised the Chacona building was being considered, yet the old #9 Firehouse one block south hasn't been.
The Facebook page for the new tallest in downtown Ithaca, Harold's Square. Included are demolition video and pics and a video of what the view will be from the top of the building.
An historic building in downtown area will be renovated and the use will be housing for young professionals instead of the proposed safe heroin injection site. From the Ithaca Voice:
For reference, the building in question is the light color building in the middle with the Salvation Army on the right side of the pic. To the left is the Southern Tier AIDS Program. Further left is the Tompkins County Social Services building. The next two buildings down are a hair salon and the Cayuga Addiction Recovery Services. I hope the new housing can attract the young professionals to the area. On another note, my brother lives near the next intersection. He finds used needles on the back porch of his apartment quite frequently.

So, this is definitely a welcomed change in terms of plans.
Given the momentum in terms of construction and demand, I think it would work.
