State lawmakers are set to include Sammy’s Law in the forthcoming state budget, allowing New York City to lower its speed limit to 20 miles per hour, Gov. Kathy Hochul said on Thursday.

Hochul confirmed during an unrelated news conference in Manhattan Thursday afternoon that the measure would make it into the budget, which has still not been finalized nearly three weeks after it was due.

That should garner a lot of new revenue from speeding tickets. Are red light cameras going in as well?

Here in Knoxville, Tennessee people actually do 20 mph in the school zones so marked. Bicycle speed. It is one thing to do that in a school zone. It is something else for 50 blocks.

Meanwhile, with gridlock in NYC, will anybody even notice the lower speed limit?

“Lower speed limits save lives, and I am overjoyed that Sammy’s Law will finally pass in the state budget,”

maybe if people paid attention to what is gong on out in the streets there wouldn't be that many lives lost.
seems like these days no one is ever paying attention to what they are doing.

20 is too slow, 25 is too slow.

do they want us to crawl??????

Yes Government chips away slowly. At this rate in 10 years speed limit will be 5 mph and then cars will only be able to be used on certain days. etc etc.

I call it the red light camera plan. Started with 25 back in the 90s and now they are everywhere.

Same thing

I hope the state’s budget includes the budget for all the new speed limit signs NYC will have to buy (plus include installment costs too.)

You could argue that in Manhattan speeds rarely hit over 25mph for more than a few secs before hitting a traffic light or congestion.

Speed cameras are only catching people trying to beat the light to the next light for just a few secs.

Also a lot of pedestrians and bikers are often have zero regard for traffic rules and safety. People will die even with a 5mph hit so it's not gonna make any difference 5 or 20mph hit with a 4k pound car.

Another unintended consequence with lower the speed limit will be that traffic will get even worse and that means less cars able to get through manhattan's congestion tolls. Which is counter to what they want, the more efficient the roads are the more tolls will get collected. They will find the congestion tolls won't meet the target of $1bn for sure.

Another money grab approved by that witch Hochul. 20mph is the speed of a bicycle and in a car is a crawl. Time to start ordering your illegal license plate covers.
