St. Patrick was born in Britain to a wealthy Romanized family. Meaning his family were Celts who adopted Roman culture after the conquest.
He was captured at 16 by Irish raiders and sold into slavery in Ireland. He escaped after 6 years and reunited with his family. He claimed a calling to return to Ireland and preach Catholicism. Interestingly, he was never formally canonized as he lived prior to the implementation of canonization of saints in the Catholic Church.
While not African, he is the patron saint of Nigeria.
