People are locked up right now, yet crime is still being committed

I mean incarceration has been around hundreds of years, yet we still have crime. So is it really a deterrent?
Incarceration isn’t about reducing crime to 0 but it does keep crime lower than not incarcerating. Just think about it…if a criminal was locked up instead of walking around freely, he would not have a chance to commit another crime.
