Because it's rent is very cheap. And when that happens people feel like they are in a ghetto, and alot feel proud of that and want to act like a "thug". Then drugs came to play and just made the low rent family community into a garbage can ghetto.

It's a very dangerous area. Not sure what happened though. It seems to be an area infested with drugs. Almost seems like while Newark was cleaning up, the garbage moved to the next town over and has made a home for itself there.

Uhm! most latino's I know are "black".

You must not get out much since you left "erventen".

Let's not even start what color latinos are, we range the whole color spectrum FYI. I should know, I am one.

Seems much like what happened.

Just think that when "Erventen" starts to "cleanup" the next towns up are Maplewood and South Orange.

Hhemmm!

Maybe the out-of-control higher taxes in those two drab hollows will cause the thugs to become more conservative and gentrified. Sort-a like the ones that are already living (quite civilly) in Maplewood and South Orange already.

Seems what we call "the-burbs" just makes whoever lives there all warm and cozy and stuff.

Look! you all watched the Sopranos. Those huge houses were not in "Erventen".

Thugs and gangstas can be good nieghbors too it seems then!

My parents lived in Irvington in late 80s on a border of union and they told me that its was still pretty good next to them but almost overnight became gang infested and just got dangerous. As if for the National guards its true, i worked with 3 people that lived in Irvington on Myrtle Ave and they said that township was broke and they didnt have money to pay to Police and had to call national guard. Couple years back there was a State Police instead of Irvington Police for a while.
I went to that same church and grammar school off of Grove and Smalley Terr. during the 80s. During that time I would walk home at night from school play practices, after night mass, after a touch football game in the school parking lot, etc. Now I'm leery about driving through there in during the day. Forget about driving through there at night and the thought of walking from the church to where I used to stay just as a reminiscing walk... Sh********.

Irvington I work in that area and you could'nt PAY ME to live there dont even bother to visit unless you have to. The place actually appears better since all the streets went to one way and they rebuilt a lot of empty houses but it gets rough after dark.

I got lost in Irvington once - I was driving home from Short Hills Mall - and there was this huge sign saying "THIS IS A CRACK BLOCK" that had been put up by the IPD - right across the street! That was one of the scariest places I ever was in my life - and I don't scare too easily.

I grew up in Irvington, moved out in 1971. It was such a nice town in the 60's. The last time I drove past my old home on Breckenridge Terr. seems like the detached garage was leaning. I'm sure it is no longer standing, since that was at least 15 years ago. Rather than check and perhaps get shot at, I'll keep my pleasant memories than go back and look at it again.
