My guess is Mr. Haber's crack tree cutting contractor consisted of some eejit owner and his merry band of illegal alien employees. Construction, landscaping, etc... it doesn't matter much nowadays, that is pretty much how things roll when people go with lowest bidder or certain contractors.

Any legit contractor familiar with area and so forth would have known about local laws regarding cutting down trees. He certainly wouldn't have instructed his guys to cross over a fence onto private property (clearly marked also by "No Trespassing" signs) and start cutting down or lopping off tops of trees.

Am going to keep an eye on this story to see if court documents finally start naming names; that is just who the contractor in this case happens to be.
Sorry, but you can't fully blame the contractor here - the owner new exactly what he was doing. The guy could have easily said something along the lines of "yes, those are my no trespassing signs" or some variation of that. There is surely some accountability there, but most of it should reside with the soon-to-be-much-poorer neighbor.

How long did the guy who had the trees cut down live there?
Where did he live before he moved there?

Damage someone's property and you get the actual value plus punitive damages, multiple times the value.

Time to plant some telephone poles and netting to block the view.

Environmental damage should be under the pervue of the EPA. Not sure if that is part on NJ highlands.

Signs were posted on trees located on property as well along fence.

Even if half of what you said is true there was a *FENCE* which clearly indicated property line.

No self respecting professional contractor or landscape guy is going to send his people onto other side of a fence just because guy who hired him said it was "ok".

Response of "just obeying orders" or "just doing what I was told" has horrible precedents.

Any and every legit contractor who operates in NJ knows or should know the deal:

"Under New Jersey’s common law trespass, a person may be liable for any injury or damage caused by cutting down a tree without the consent of the owner of the land. In addition, a person can be liable for “timber trespass” for intentionally cut trees, even if it is done without the intent to cause harm. It is best to take pictures of the damaged trees in order to prove the damage during any legal proceedings."

Could see your argument if no fence existed, but it did.

Outta left field, but that looks to be the old Milton Untermeyer estate's land, where "The Gate" was featured once on Weird NJ magazine. I almost cried when I saw it all being developed.

Could be, would have to research further...

There are a number of properties on Saw Mill Road up there that are advertised as once being part of Untermeyer's estate, so you may be onto something.

That being said IIRC town of Kinnelon purchased large part of former estate to preserve it as park land.

What was the “good deed”? That comment is perplexing.

One landscaper thought he was doing by cutting down those trees.
