Two reasons:

1) to provide a highly reflective location on the front of the vehicle to aim laser speed devices,

2) for police officers to identify vehicles coming at them when searching for a vehicle.

#1 absolutely not true, and before you ask why, I was a certified radar instructor / operator.

Because "painting" down the front of the car provides much higher readings.

Anyway, NJ had two front plates long before LIDAR.

Why would you want a "Euro" plate on your car?

I bet you drive a VW...am I right? if yes can I guess what model?

So what's the reason for front and back plates?

If what I saw on Mythbusters is correct, reflective plate or not do nothing. They did an episode on how to beat radar/laser and out of things they tried, trying to be extra reflective or non-reflective didn't do anything.

Not really. In any case, two license plates have been on NJ (and many other states) LONG before that device was in use.

The front plate is simply a standard aiming point. Even more so now that some units have built in video.

I would think the reason for a front license plate is the same reason for a rear licence plate. So that your car can be identified.

Also it helps them with their "camera cars" that actively scan plates as they drive along. Nice for when YOUR car gets stolen, PITA for everyone else that may not be 100% legal.
