Just a heads-up for history buffs and particularly those with school kids. A true-size replica of Columbus' Nina is arriving in Georgetown today for a week's visit, and will be open for tours.
We visited it when it was in town several years ago, and it was well worth the few bucks admission. From history books, I had a pre-conceived image of his ships, which proved to be totally wrong. To be able to hop on a ship this small over 500 years ago and head out across the ocean gives new meaning to the term, courage.
I heard this on the radio this week....I am going to take my little one on saturday but I haven't told him what we are going to see...so he will be surprised.
PD-
Thanks for this post! I just got a new dSLR and will DEFINITELY hit this up next week during the day, maybe Monday, when it will be less crowded! Will try and remember to post up pics here for all to see.. Assuming, of course, they come out ok..
That's right, rub it in! You've got me drooling, now show me some of the pics you get from it. Better yet, come on over to the Photography Forum and share 'em around.
If you want a real photo-op, the last time Nina was in GTown, they departed north up the ICW. I missed it, but would have loved some shots of it sailing up the Waccamaw. Their next scheduled stop is Philly, so maybe the same route. If you visit the ship, see if you can wrangle a departure time and route out of the skipper.
neecewh, it's worth a visit. Don't know what the crowds will be like, but I was impressed. I understand their new larger sister ship, the Pinta, is along this time, but I'm not sure if it's open for tours or not.
Seeing that I work at a place on the ICW, I will be SURE to ask for departure time... Would be awesome to have shots of the ships passing by to have printed and hung inside!
I saw that the Sun News had a few pictures in today's online edition. Can't wait to see them in person.
PS-
I'll be checking out that photography forum as well... Need to get good pointers, etc.. Accumulating a couple lenses now.. Love Ebay!
