Question, why do you think you might want to go to MB? I’m local. Please go to Litchfield Beach, Charleston, Pawley’s Island, Beaufort or Kiawah Island. I’ve going to MB since the 60’s and am now retirement age and wouldn’t go to MB if it was free.
MB is where the wife wanted to go for our anniversary. Just keeping her happy if you know what I mean.
And 54 years ago we were married on the 9th of Sep so I am pretty much stuck with the date.
She has never seen the Atlantic and when we lived in CA we spent a lot of time at the Pacific. She loves the beaches! So, with the oceanfront room, actally a large suite, she will get her fill of the Atlantic.
But still, as it is the end of one of the last holiday weeks with vacations being popular and my late reservation it still costs me just under $1000k for the 3 nights. And Homewood Suite is close to the boardwalk for my wheelchair too.
At least this is a special ocassion and it only comes once a year.
TNX for the replies, and enjoy the last holiday of the summer.

I made the trip to MB a number of times, beginning in 1980. A friend of mine used to own a condo unit there, in the Cherry Grove section. However it's been 20 years, since my last visit. From what I've heard, "it ain't what it used to be"......
I have heard from someone who used to visit there years ago and they tell me that just looking at the internet that it is now perhaps a place he does not want to go anymore.
Such is life I guess.
We are only some 4 hours from there so we thought we would try it anyway.

I think a lot of the success or failure of your vacation time in MB is dependent on the time at which you go there. Traditionally, the area has been a "family oriented" area, therefore people generally do not take their children out of school for a week, to go to the beach. This means that MB is "heavily populated" beginning in mid-late June, and lasting through early September.
Keep in mind that "just looking at the internet" will get you click bait, headlines looking for internet traffic, negative nellies, etc. Seldom will you see someone who was thrilled with their trip post.
While MB is certainly not what it used to be (what place is?), with the right location and common sense (don't go walking on the beach at 2:00am), one can have a great vacation here.
Trip was OK.
Hotel was nice as was the service. We were on the 19th floor which had a great view of the Atlantic.
Looking around reminded me of Miami many years ago however. Scary~~then again I understand it is the number one place for vacations in SC
Not a place that I would consider going back to however. For us it is a 600 mile round trip also.
