As a lifelong Maryland resident (>60 years)... I've never heard of Maryland fried chicken. PA has amazing chicken they call 'broasted'. Royal Farms is a big thing but nothing special IMHO.
Maryland Fried Chicken serves a "broasted" chicken (broiled and roasted). It is absolutely delicious! I ate at a location in Orlando, FL a few years back and couldn't get over how good it was. Rather surprised it's not bigger than it is.

They never had a strong corporate management. Most are independent franchises from back in the day but apparently those remaining locations still perform well. A Maryland transplant originated the concept in Orlando Florida as he was inspired by the success of Kentucky Fried Chicken. But he developed a popular "broasted" technique as mentioned. Also back in the day Col. Sanders cousin Lee Cummings founded Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken and tweaked a technique similar to KFC Original Recipe. The one remaining Lee's location in SC is in Rock Hill, as the Spartanburg store closed several years ago.

Grew up in Chevy Chase, summer house on Chesapeake Bay . . . Never heard of Maryland fried chicken. Maryland crab cakes but not chicken.
This is the deal with Fried chicken in South Carolina. You can literally be on a back country road in nowhere South Carolina and run across a gas station with the worlds best fried chicken and biscuits. Locals tend to either fry the chicken themselves, or buy it in some country store. Same thing with BBQ and boiled peanuts.

But I am sure you remember Roy Rogers as we may have discussed before. They are known for fried chicken, roast beef sandwiches and burgers. And they once dominated in the Mid Atlantic and Northeast markets, as well as locations in the Midwest. They are now slowly expanding again after emerging from a failed Hardee's merger.
Fried chicken is pretty much fried chicken. I've tried "Royal Farms" (which is a gas station on the lines with WaWa and Sheetz) and it's ok in a pinch. Would never "crave" it. I like KFC, if I don't feel like frying my own!
