It's too easy to blame our current fiasco on tourists. It just gives us one more excuse not to take personal responsibility and do what we should, regardless of how inconvenient it is. I suspect far more positive cases have left the beach than have come to us during this period.
High school graduations occurred about the time cases skyrocketed. Photos taken during the ceremonies showed social distancing and masks. Photos taken after the formalities showed plenty of hugs and group selfies, with no masks or distancing in sight. That's what kids do. Where were the parents to show some tiny iota of adult responsibility? The graduations were followed by parties in homes and restaurants, once again with few masks and no social distancing. These are the same kids that staff our local restaurants all summer. Our situation was totally predictable.
But it's not just kids. I see locals and businesses every day refusing to wear masks or social distance, for whatever imaginary reason they find to justify it, and little has changed with the mask mandates. We have a governor who refuses to take any stronger action than to "expect people to do the right thing." Neighborhood HOA's open pools, and post signs about social distancing. What a joke. We want the problem to go away, but we don't want to inconvenience ourselves by doing the simple things it takes to fix it. We are far more too concerned about "personal freedom", which is nothing more than a lame excuse for laziness and stupidity.
We need to get over ourselves and pay attention to the science.
