You pay the taxes as part of the registration and it's based on the value of the vehicle. I have a 2011 Honda Odyssey minivan which had a book, value of over $15,000 when I bought it and the taxes were like $300 or so. In October we bought a new Toyota Prius and the taxes were about the same.
The Horry County/DMV has some information bit it's not great from my experi nice I trying to figure it out.

Each year, unless the vehicle increases in value would reply in lower tax when renewing the registration. I'll know for sure in a few weeks when my minivan renewal will be due.

Toyotas and Hondas maintain their value too well that's why the taxes are a little higher there. Regarding the original post, for my 94 Z28 LT1 I pay just under $150 to my best recollection.
