Depends on where you are coming from in NY. We are in the Hudson Valley. We also come down with a camper and I hate giving states extra toll money for my camper. So we go I-87 to I-287. Take that to I-78 to shoot over to I-81. Take it down til you hit I-66 in Virginia. Then get on 17S to bring you into Fredricksburg and I-95. I try to hit this area mid day as the commuters are all at work-biggest trip, travel mid week. The traffic is much better. From there we get to Surfside by 38, 501 then 544.
I did the drive down 2 weeks ago although further south as I was taking the youngest to college in Savannah. I made it all the way on I-95 back home from Waltersboro in 15 hours due to a clustermuck in VA/MD-no accidents just stupid brake checks that start a backup because people tailgate.
We also live in the MC area and have found 95 to 38 which then becomes 501 to 544 to Bypass 17 to Farrow Pkwy when southbound the best route especially when school buses are on the road or on weekends. Using 544 cuts off most of the congestion on 501 in the Carolina Forrest area. Going north in the early morning hours (before school) we will take 707 (Farrow Pkwy) to 544 then 501 through Conway to 38 and northbound 95. We've tried them all but find these routes to be more driver friendly as they are all 4 lane highways.

This provides 4 lane roadway all the way. Watch for radar in Aynor!
From the North (heading south) we take I-95 to WILSON, NC, and hit I-795 to I-140/ I-40E to Wilmington. We then take Rt. 17 into Little River, SC. We are in N Myrtle, so that's our fastest route...less traffic, too! They are extending the I-140 bypass now...and that will cut off a big chunk of local traffic around the Leland area in Wilmington. Should save another 20 mins. or so! Can't wait for that!
