only since 1956 - and if there was nothing else there (than the beach and sand and surf), it'd be plenty to me.

Okay, burr, I concede...without the beach, sand and surf it ain't a beach "here" or "over yonder"...but I still say things like Dollar General, storage buildings, BEACH TOWEL shops, and a gazillion grocery stores makes even your beach seem like every other place in the great US of A...parking lots, cement buildings and no trees.
I find it amusing when people move to a particular area get annoyed/upset that other people move to that same area and things change. My grandfather was born in Pawleys in 1925 and the complaints some of you are making are similar to the complaints he and others alike were making since the first wave of transplants came to area. It's hypocritical to get annoyed at a new wave of demographics changing the area when you, at one point, were the new wave that changed the area for a previous group. No one rain drop thinks it is responsible for the flood but what goes around, comes around.

No argument from me. I've said on numerous occasions we have literally loved this place to death. The same thing has occurred to coastal areas all around the country.
Regardless, I guess I didn't do a very good job of trying to make my point. We are already overbuilt with self-storage units. If the new builder wants to fight that handicap, fine, but does it really need to be directly on Hwy 17, requiring more clearing of the few trees still left? There is available off-17 commercial properties with good back road access, but instead, we continue to approve more and more commercial entrances on Hwy 17, adding more and more interruptions to the already noxious traffic flow. Our leaders pat themselves on the back for the "strong" Waccamaw Neck zoning overlay, but it is filled with exceptions, end-runs, and special-interest exemptions. The classic story of too little too late.
I'm happy for you, Darlin'. Just shop your little old heart out. But, you see, there was a time - back when you were still searchin' for designer bags in WV - when this area offered the best of both worlds. For those who sought the convenience of everything they wanted just around the corner, MB was happy to oblige. On the other hand, those who didn't see anything wrong with driving a few miles to get what they need, who actually preferred quiet wooded views to one more dress boutique, tended to migrate toward a slower pace in the small-town feel of Pawleys or Murrells Inlet, or even at one time Surfside and Garden City. Instead of respecting what we had, we have allowed uncontrolled urban sprawl to create one continuous Grand Strand strip mall of commercial redundance. And this pace of urban sprawl is increasing exponentially, as more and more crowd into a fragile environment that cannot support the growth and still survive.
Paradise? I guess everything is relative...
I do believe it is the redundance that is upsetting to me as well.....how many CVS' and Dollar Generals does one area need? I can totally understand building something of quality that is going to bring in what I call "quality" employment/jobs....but these stores only add to the frustrating job market...hiring only part timers with no benefits and lousy pay...I don't think that it is adding anything to the Myrtle Beach economy but more folks in the unemployment line after the holidays or tourist season ends and they are no longer needed..... Lets build a or add onto the hospitals, universities, small businesses in the area and create some real growth.....

Absolutely. I remember when 10th Avenue North that connected Kings Highway and 17 Bypass was a sand road.
My mother's family is from the Low Country/Charleston. Charleston has done a great job of preserving the downtown.
