Leaving this week end for North Myrtle Beach; AAA trip tik uses the following route (which we're not familiar with); @ 95 S in SC, use 74 East (Andrew Jackson Hwy), then 410 S to 701/701B, Rte. 9 S thru Longs, to Rte. 90 (State Hwy 57S) to Water Tower Rd.
Because we've, in the past, gone to Surfside we always took 501 to 17, but this year we're going to be staying in North MB (Barefoot Resort), so this route is a new to us. Is there anything we should know? ie, construction, speed traps, slower roads - any information would be really helpful. Otherwise, we'll just take 501 and add a couple of miles to our trip and stick with the familiar. Thanks to anyone who can enlighten us.
Generally, 501 is the road to avoid at all costs. You won't find a route coming into the area that is more congested than 501. Coming in on Rte. 9 is much better. In the future, that route will serve you better to get to Surfside Beach too (9/31/22/17).
I suggest you take route 95 to exit 81 (in North Carolina) which is Route 40. You take that right into Wilmington, which leads you directly to North Myrtle Beach. I've been traveling down to NMB for the last 25 years, and it's the ONLY way to go!!! Have a safe trip.
You can pick it up at Dillon, S.C. just over the N.C. state line, it's like the second exit about 5 miles into S.C.. Rt. 9 is not bad, 2 way traffic most all the way and and few turns in the small towns along the way. It's well marked, you wont have a problem with that route, just PAY ATTENTION to the speed limits in the small towns along Rt.9 or your almost guaranteed a ticket.
The I-95 to I-40 East to Wilmington, N.C. that was mentioned by someone is also a good route, after you get out of Wilmington it's divided highway all the way with not to many traffic lights.
Looked at your first post again and put those roads together in my mind finally. You can pick up what is now I-74 East(Andrew Jackson Hwy) in N.C. about 12 miles from the S.C. border and take it over to US 701 South to Chadbourn then Tabor City, N.C. and then into S.C. and pick up SC 9 from there to N. Myrtle Beach.
Not bad, did that route a couple of times, becoming very popular in peak season. Warning: I-74 is very desolate, not much commercial growth yet. Once on 701 it's 2 way traffic with a few traffic lights in each town. The only problem I found is if there is a problem on the US 701 section there is no easy way around it.
