I am wondering if it is not a Southern or Northern thing, I'm thinking it is due to bigger profits by looking for "buyers" rather then getting a low commission for making a rental.
I've seen this over time looking for a summer rental. Up North there was a man who answered who was disinterested for sure when he thought I was looking for a $500 rental. He slightly perked up when I said $1500.
I always felt the sale of a home would give them the funds they are looking for, the rentals not.

However, I did notice there is a Weichert "rental" office on the Main Street of Surfside Beach. Specific to rentals it seems.

Hi Summering!

I'm sure it is not North or South and my experience - though limited for sure - was for purchases. I think sometimes it just matters who happens to be on the other end of that phone when you call!

As a "Suthern" girl, I so appreciate all of the wonderful comments folks on this board have made about Southern hospitality. Living in Texas has been a treat as well - it's kind of a western/southern friendliness that is a little different than the East coast. Nevertheless, I have traveled all over both "regions" and met great folks and not-so-great in all areas!

Hope the beach is being good to ya - retiring in December 2014 and heading East!!
