We are in Wilmington,N.C. and go down there at least once a month and are thinking of relocating there as well when hubby retires. So far,we like Market Common and Murrells Inlet the best.
For $1000 a month you could buy a nice home. Rental market is tight right now, not a whole lot available out there. Personally, I like the north end, as it is more removed from the hustle and bustle of the tourists, and there are plenty of homes available in non HOA areas at good prices. Many of those homes in the Longs area are even USDA approved so you wouldn't need any money down. I have lived on the north end (North Myrtle Beach/ Little River) since 1985 and love it here.
Just for my info...I used to live in Azalea Lakes off of 17 in the pastel looking condo buildings. That was back in 2009-2010. My rent at the time was $550 for a 1BR and I think those units were going for $100k. Any updates on pricing for those now? I do know that the pricing for that unit has come way down, but what about rent in that area? If I didn't have to move, that's where I would have liked to stayed.
Wonder in new-adventure ever made it down? I live in the Socastee area. My oldest will be attending Forestbrook Middle School this year as a 6th grader. I think Horry County schools are the way to go if your child can get into the gifted programs.
I agree with the difference in curriculums between here and up North. We had to move back to Ohio a couple years ago and we put the kids in school for the year. They were "Average" students getting mostly B's & a couple A's as well. After the school year we were able to move back down here, re-enrolled in Lakewood Elementary and they are always on the All A's honor roll, GT classes, etc.
I don't think the education is "bad" in Horry County but it does seem to be just a bit behind. I can't comment on High School though.
If you're (still) looking for a place to live I would suggest Socastee if you're looking for a home not in an HOA. Check around Forestbrook Rd or Peachtree Rd by the Swing Bridge. There are single-family homes there (not Mobile homes) and Socastee is close enough to the action but very quiet, especially if you can get a home down Peachtree.
