Another good thing for our area is the SUPER Target rising as we speak. That area will also have a Marshalls and some other stores. So this will bring more retail jobs into the area.
We will always have jobs in retail here along with jobs in the hotel industry.

What makes that area of 501 look so bad is the now defunk Hard Rock Theme Park. I always felt the park was too far from the beach, and too expensive, for it to make a go of it. Sadly it sits with the land abandoned and the Hard Rock Guitar still gleaming in the sunshine. This a sad reminder of what was thought to be something grand for the area.

Bringing the Waccamaw Pottery area back would make for a wonderful new place to visit. I hope they do a good job with it.

These jobs pay minimum wage or just a little higher...most people here have to take 2 or 3 of these jobs to survive here...I just love you dreamers out there.... and I happen to know ALOT of them...sad really to have to work many jobs just to make your rent...

That is true in a lot of places people might move to. I know the people of Delaware seem to hold the same complaints about low wages.

The only point one can make is that you'll get the same minimum wage in Pa. or NJ. with even higher rent costs. Also more pricey homes and taxes.

So its a matter of working your way up the ladder no matter where you go.

Hopefully a good education will bring you to a place and location that is comfortable for you.

No, I don't think so...not so much....in those areas there are ALOT more jobs that are NOT minimum wage.....here you get the SAME type of job at a much lower wage..and the RENT IS NOT LOWER HERE....why do you folks just want to glorify this area....yes I am sure in the cities right outside of New York and throughout Jersey and parts of PA near large metro areas...the rent is higher...and also the same secretarial intermediate type of jobs WITH some education, etc. pay is lower as well and NO BENEFITS to speak of....and this is all if you are LUCKY enough to get one of these positions.....it is who you know here not what you know...and God help you if you do not have an accent......if you retire here that is one thing...but if you want to come here and start on a career path...there are sooo many other areas to choose from....I just don't get it! I probably never will.......and there is NO ladder here....I have been in the same position close to five years now with no hopes of moving up any kind of ladder...employers here think you are just lucky to get the job....don't complain...you are a right to work state baby....you can be eliminated.....

With the possible exception of the RE agents and the Chamber of Commerce, I don't recall seeing many folks glamorizing the unglamorous aspects of the area. There are threads after threads warning folks of the job and pay situation around here. The standard response, over and over, is if you need income, do NOT move here unless you have a confirmed job. Generally, pay scales have always been low around here, well before the latest recession. That's typical of tourism-based economies, and shouldn't be a surprise to anybody moving to the area. The things you are complaining about are old hat to the locals. They've lived with it for all their lives.

There is much to glorify about this area - weather, scenery, low taxes, and relatively low home prices. The problems occur when people have no realistic concept of what it's like to live and work here, and never bother to pay attention to all the warning signs. Sorry, I just have a hard time feeling sorry for folks who don't listen and don't do their homework before they arrive in "paradise", and then spend most of their time complaining about the area.

BTW, you are lucky to have a job. Just ask the 200,000 South Carolinians who are trying but cannot a job.

Really? Really? I am NOT complaining...I am informing....I live in reality not paradise...and I did my homework...but the internet cannot tell you everything...sometimes YOU HAVE TO SEE FOR YOURSELF....
As well, I know I am lucky....I feel fortunate to be employed....but, I am sorry you and others here do glorify this area (just my opinion) I did say that for retired people the area serves you well....just as you say...low taxes, low home prices, etc. comparatively...especially if you are from New Jersey, New York, Mass....but I just want to re-iterate I don't think this area is a place to seek a "career" and move from somewhere you do have a job with good pay.... just because there is a beach and mild temps in the winter.....
