The "best" town for you depends on what you are looking for in a place to live. In the country, suburb or downtown? On the beach, near the beach, doesn't matter? Convenient to movie theaters, shopping, etc or doesn't matter? Condo, apt, mobile home, house? Cheap, middle of the road or high end rent? No traffic or don't mind sitting in traffic? There are so many variables even beyond these questions that help define what's the 'best' town for an individual. If you can provide a little more information, it would help.
Stay closer to the beach. That's the best part of the area, take advantage of it. This is my personal opinion. Do not move to Socastee. Its not well kept and while there are lovely homes, lots of run down areas. Also would never move to Conway. Its out there and the traffic must be insane as the main road is the same road millions of people take to get to MB. Personally, I would do North Myrtle, Murrells Inlet or Surfside Beach as my top areas. Oh yeah and Pawleys Island is great. Georgetown smells awful cause they have a paper mill. Its a cute little place, but that smell!! You really need to come see for yourself. My first purchase was in Socastee and I was disappointed and moved to Surfside and we love it.
As to crime remember those horrible MB stats are based on a population to swells to the MILLIONS in the summer. I felt perfectly safe every time I went there. Its obvious which areas to avoid. Some of the nicest homes are in MB including the Dunes and Carolina Forest. Great beachs, great weather....enjoy
I’m 64 I’m planning on moving there in July! Can you tell me the best towns to live in. Don’t want to buy just rent apt or house
Logan10, My family of 3 seniors is hoping to move to Myrtle Beach this year also. We're not sure about doing it during the tourist season, since we'll have to initially go to a motel and their worst reviews usually are from the times the hotels are crowded. Wondering if you will go directly to your rental home because if you can do that, it would probably eliminate that hotel problem -- I would think. I have been on this MB area section and although I don't know the neighborhoods and streets, I have heard over the years great things about Little River, North Myrtle, Murrells Inlet and Pawley's Island. A shady sort of realtor told me some kind of a mill is going into Georgetown, so he expects that area will go down with that. I have friends in Carolina Farms in MB and there may be rentals there. Also on here many people claim that MB city is nice -- you just need to know the neighborhoods. It reminds me of cities that have some crime but have "pockets" where it's very nice. However, sounds like in MB, the "pockets" are the high crime areas, most of the city being fine.

Logan10, our household of 3 hopes to move to MB this year. Did you find any area to rent in? We will need to rent also. Are you initially staying in a motel or are you staying with people you know?
North Myrtle Beach is pretty nice. And if you don’t mind driving an hour and a half there is always Wilmington which is very similar but not as touristy.
