We looked in Conway when we moved here last year and it was originally our first choice before we came down to explore. We decided it was too far from the ocean (20-30 minutes depending on where you live or more on the weekends with tourists). The downtown is quaint and has an artistic section and some specialty shops and restaurants. It also has its share of empty storefronts. Housing near the downtown area is mostly older homes and some of them border on the less safe part of town. So, if you consider housing near the downtown area, you'll need to find out where the less desirable areas are. When we were exploring, we stayed in a bed & breakfast in Conway and the owners were very helpful with providing information to us about the town. They even took us around in their car and showed us the different sections of town and the pluses and minuses of each section. PM me if you want the B&B name and the owners.
If you don't live near the downtown area, the rest of Conway is similar to the rest of the Grand Strand...nice bedroom communities with strip malls close by OR more rural with a drive required to get to any shopping.
Overall, I would say that Conway is a nice southern town but would not try and equate it with what you have in Long Island...different place and different feel. (We're originally from CT so I'm familiar with the northeast.)
Thanks for your insight. Now that you mention it, I think Conway will be too far from the water. I think I will be happier being closer to the water. Just wish I could find the total package!
Check out Waterford Plantation, and Covington Lakes both in Carolina Forest. Many 4 bedroom homes for rent and very family friendly as well as having good schools. Close to shopping, beach and yes traffic in the summer is bad but as a local you'll learn the backroads and have no problems.
Check out Little River, next to No. Myrtle Beach, fairly close to the Beach and close to shopping in Calabash. LR, NMB, MB due to easy access to HWY31. I still cannot get over how few people drive this road - most of the time it feels like my private road. Such a switch from the roads I am used to in the Boston area...
When/if our houses ever sells up here, we want to relocate to Little River too. We like Lafayette Park, where you are building and agree, Rt 31 is wonderful!
Correction:"house" not "houses." One is enough to try to sell-lol.
