Ate lunch there today for the 1st time. It was good, I'll eat there again. They've got live blues on Friday nites. Hope they make it, it could turn into a neat hang-out spot.
Hey vrexy - I had their jerk chicken lunch plate. Came with rice&peas, collards, a small piece of plantain and a small piece of festival bread. The jerk was sneaky hot but not overwhelming at all. It was all good, with the chicken skin the best part, capturing all the best flavors. I would have liked a little more plantain and festival bread and a little less veggies/starch. We ordered two more small pieces of the bread for an extra $1.
Don't recall any meat pie on the menu, although they had an island dumpling appetizer stuffed with jerk pork. I think it was either steamed or fried. Despite the jerk, the menu had a definite "Americanized" slant to it.
I like the sound of "sneaky hot" but wish it would be more authentic and not Americanized........Oh well.......I appreciate the feedback, etc. Nice to know what you thought and I do plan on going there sometime. Did you like the festival bread? I have never heard of that before.

Sorry vrexy, I had a time-out last nite. Yeah, it was good. I'd had it several times in the islands, and Mama Rue's version did it justice. It's fried, kinda like a hushpuppy, except usually a little larger and sweeter. The texture is more bread-like rather than just cornmeal. I wish they'd serve a small basket of 'em with a meal, ala' hushpuppies, rather than one small one on the plate. A minor gripe...
I understand the chef is from Jamaica, but I'm sure the owners had a hand in the menu planning. I'm not sure whether a pure Caribbean cuisine restaurant would make it in PI or not. Regardless, the jerk is very good, and there are options for those looking for something else. It's worth checking out.
