We have an HOA swimming pool with no lifeguard on duty. What is the age that most HOA pools have for children swimming unsupervised?

Ours, I believe, is 12 and under (must have an adult to enter the pool area). I'm not there at the moment and don't have young children, so I am fuzzy on what the pool rules sign says.......

Our HOA regs state: "State regulations require all children 13 years of age or younger to be accompanied by an adult." I do not know that to be a fact.

There are no 'laws' per say when referring to the minimum ages of children in a swimming pool.

The Rules and Regulations implemented by HOA's will vary from Association to Association. In a perfect world, children under the age of 16 would noty be allowed in a pool without parental (adult) supervision, but this will never happen. This, of course, is in my own personal opinion.

Is there a particular reason you pose the question?

Here in the Upstate 13 yrs and up can go unsupervised in our HOA pool. Warn your child that no swimming is allowed unless someone else is there. It may have something to do with the fact that 13 yr olds can stay home alone legally; well at least I think it is a law but again maybe only a recommendation.

My parent's HOA makes the kids be 14. Seems fair enough. Not sure I'd trust a 12 year old to go where I tell them to or how to act appropriately. Sadly, some parents allow their kids to sneak in, or they leave the kids there under the premise that they'll "be right back". And then you're stuck with unruly kids with no one to watch them.

Our HOA is trying to decide on an age.

Best of luck.... I'm sure it will set some owners on fire, regardless of what decision is made. The joys of being on a board.. or in management..

Most state law offers guide lines.
The HOA should ask the attorney for suggestions.

Here (in CO) we are advised that age limits can be set based on safety.

I know at some summer camps the kids are required to take a swimming test before being allowed in the pool on their own. Maybe your HOA could set an age and also require that children over that age demonstrate an ability to swim, and then augment that with a required swimming test. As a parent, I would never let my child, no matter what age, alone at a pool with no lifeguard if the child could not swim. But some parents don't have much commen sense.
