Naw....I like what RDJ brought to that character. He is to Iron Man what Harrison Ford is to Han Solo/Indiana Jones.
No one else could play Iron Man like him. No one. They had him in mind when it was created. Tom Cruise wanted it SO BAD. Please. He would have been horrible.

I can see Tom Cruise as Tony Stark, at least until Spider-Man Homecoming where his getting on towards his middle ages is a plot point and Cruise still wants to play the young man.

No way. RDJ is Tony Stark. Cruise does not have his natural personality.

I agree. But the character has stopped growing. In the first IRON MAN movie (still one of Marvel's best), Tony started as a brilliant but thoroughly spoiled and self-absorbed man-child. He had an epiphany and tried to grow out of it. And then in every movie since he continues to be the spoiled little man-child.
Downey is one of the greatest working actors today. But the writers need to give him something to do other than sarcasm and snark.

That may be a Downey problem. There was character growth in IM3--the real point of the story was Tony Stark learning whether the hero was the suit or the man.
I think growth as a mentor was supposed to be happening in Spider-Man: Homecoming as well.
It may be that Downey isn't projecting the growth that's exhibited in the story.

The actors can only perform what's in the script. The writers don't seem to want Tony to grow up.

Back to the Panther subject, I don't know what I am missing, but saw it last nite and was bored, seriously bored.Maybe I have overdosed on these Marvel movies, but I do have a grand son who likes going to the movies with me,so I shall carry on.
He, a Marvel in his own right, loved it.
