Black Panther did not have the highest opening for the first weekend, but by day #4 it took over. Right now it looks probable it will be the highest earning MCU film domestically .

In the overseas market, "Doctor Strange" is the highest MCU movie featuring a new character, and it certainly seems as if Black Panther will beat those earnings, but it is unclear if it will go past the movies with established characters.

$128.60 The Incredible Hulk
$193.90 Captain America: The First Avenger
$266.80 Iron Man
$268.30 Thor
$311.50 Iron Man 2
$326.30 Black Panther
$339.10 Ant-Man
$438.20 Thor: The Dark World
$440.20 Guardians of the Galaxy
$445.10 Doctor Strange
$454.50 Captain America: The Winter Soldier
$473.90 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
$538.80 Thor: Ragnarok
$546.00 Spider-Man: Homecoming
$745.20 Captain America: Civil War
$805.80 Iron Man 3
$895.50 Marvel's The Avengers
$946.40 Avengers: Age of Ultron

Prior to Black Panther the most successful worldwide movie where all major parts were played by Black actors was Straight Outta Compton
Production Budget: $28 million
Domestic: $161 million
Foreign: $40 million

Just saw a 2:00 pm screening, the theater was packed for that time period (about 95 percent white, just sayin').

It really was a wonderful, heartfelt movie with a lot of intricacies and layers atypical of the usual superhero/comic book movies (with their "save the world" nonsense filled with titanic battles in and among metropolitan skyscrapers). Nicely acted with some very moving scenes particularly towards the end.

I didn't think the CGI was any more overdone than other super hero movies.

Two big thumbs up.

On a side note, I don't think this movie 'proves' anything about the 'marketability' of black themed movies. American audiences have always been receptive to movies with black casts, black themes, etc. Some of the most popular actors in movie history were black, Eddie Murphy, Samuel L. Jackson, Will Smith. What this movie DOES prove is that if you make a very good film and the pre-opening buzz is out of this world, not only will it open big but will have sustaining power. It's the Hollywood executives that have always refused to produce and market a movie on the scope of Black Panther because of their narrow minded views (and it's worse towards others in the industry like Asians).

Eddie Murphy, Samuel L. Jackson, Will Smith have certainly been in some of the most popular films of all time, but "Straight outta Compton" is the most successful film where all principals actors have been black

Black Panther is also primarily a Marvel film, where the basics of the story were laid out in a comic written over half a century ago.

It was on par with the rest of the Marvel fare. But it was my one genuine complaint about the movie. I guess I'm getting old, but the constant CGI and jumping and chasing and crashing and flying gets old after about two minutes. A fight scene should be all about the emotions of the characters involved at the stakes at hand, not the stunts or the special effects. I would have much preferred a more visceral one-on-one conflict between T'Challa and Klaw than that ridiculous chase scene through Busan.

Yup. It proves one thing: Quality matters. You can have the best stars, a trillion dollar marketing budget, toys on every shelf, Happy Meal tie-ins, but if your movie sucks, people won't want to see it. Ryan Coogler made a GREAT movie with Black Panther, and audiences are responding.

Tony Snark can stay home. I want more Black Panther.

The box office trajectory is pointing towards a minimum $1.1billion worldwide gross. Here's why:
  • Domestic: BP is outpacing The Avengers ($623mil).
  • Foreign: Thor: Ragnarok grossed $416mil overseas, sans Japan ($10mil) and China ($112mil). BP is outpacing Thor: Ragnarok. BP overseas gross - without Japan and China - should be over/under $455mil.
  • If we estimate - based off trajectories - BP hits $635mil domestically, and $455mil overseas (sans Japan and China), that's a $1.090billion gross.

I thought a segment on Jimmy Fallon's "The Tonight Show" was interesting. They had Black individuals stand in front of a more than life-sized photo (in costume) of Chadwick Boseman and tell the photo what the film meant to them. These people were truly inspired. Not just spectacular special effects, but inspired with meaningful cultural aspects of the film. Of course, after each person finished, Boseman walked out from behind a curtain to greet the people. It was quite touching and very interesting.

Naw....I like what RDJ brought to that character. He is to Iron Man what Harrison Ford is to Han Solo/Indiana Jones.
